I've been lucky enough to be consistently in work for a while but I finished a project in February and haven't found another. I'm not going to panic yet, as typically It's toward summer before work picks up, but it certainly would be nice to work. Instead I'm looking at diversifying and offering technical (off-shoot) services to non-film clients as a way of filling the gaps between work.

Last few years have been terrible for myself as I was just starting to get regular jobs in the wildlife film industry. Things have slowly been picking up recently but nowhere near enough work. More support for freelancers needed imo as I know I'm not the one in this situation and am fortunate enough to still be pursuing the career.

Entering my 5th month of unemployment. Done the single mum drought, the covid drought, now the Great Drought of 2023! Upgraded my camera kit after last main job in November. Should have maybe waited. Working at the local hospital as bank (flexible) staff to tread water. Its tough, and many jobs appear to be London based again. Big hug to others in the same boat. I've been out-of-contract for longer than ever before in my career! That said, I'm not particularly worried as there seems to be a consensus that things are pretty quiet at the moment and that business does appear to be picking up. @BecsHall I'd be interested in any data or stats from TM that you may be able release that could demonstrate the quietness - for example, numbers of members updating their availability - numbers of employers searching etc. Can you do that?

Barely had any work in 4.5 months. What I cannot understand is if the UK broadcasters have certain numbers of hours to fill, surely it is possible to better spread some of that work out in these quiet months. I do wonder if we've just accepted a mindset of "that's just how it is", when there might be better ways to do things? Eg quotas for wintertime commissioning!

And as others have pointed out in other forums, if there's a sudden dash to create content in the second half of the year, companies may well struggle to find available production management talent - already an issue, but likely compounded by people seeking employment elsewhere because 4-5 months without work for people is seriously damaging - and doesn't even account for the gaps in employment that will still come between any contracts later in the year.

Yeah, same as most, very very quiet, no return gigs and hard to find new gigs. I've been fortunate to pick up things here and there, just enough to get by monthly. Usually, after a little hustling, things turn up but right now, nada. I think Jyoti has a valid point, people can't afford to wait 3, 4, 5 months without work in the hope a production manager will call. The industry could lose a lot of valuable people. It's tricky as most understand you won't be employed all year but the lack of work.

Drought since September has bled my accounts dry. Confident I’ll find work again but it has hurt having to use up savings. I do agree that there needs to be some work throughout the year or the industry will suffer a serious brain drain as people go elsewhere. Very keen to get back to doing what I love!

Great post. I'm lucky I had a job lined up for a while but the end of last year/start of this year has been the quietest i've ever known it. I've also seen a lot of jobs for other people fall through, more so than ever before. It will pick up, but it's a long wait for a lot of people. Very grateful to have got this job I have now.

Yes - it seems very quiet in the UK atm. I have been expecting TV Development to take off in February/March but here we are creeping into April. I think the British economy could be impacting a Production company's desire to invest in new acquisitions and ideas. I have had some work fall through after interviews/references in February - without much explanation save the CEO has decided not to invest in Development atm. I am still getting short contracts from American-based production companies, but nothing yet this year for the UK. No doubt it will all change when we least expect it.I am a proud high functioning dyslexic who is an experienced Dev AP in Fact-Ent, Crime and Documentary. I am just starting to move into a Senior AP/Junior Producer roles in the industry. I have experience in UK and US industries.
