We chat to Melanie Leach and Andrew Mackenzie, joint CEOs of new indie, South Shore.

Despite only having launched in November 2019, South Shore is run by experienced and highly decorated producers, Melanie Leach and Andrew Mackenzie, whose award-winning partnership under TwoFour has previously led to hits including the Emmy award winning Educating series, The Jump and Sink or Swim on Channel 4; ITV’s This Time Next Year and Ibiza Weekender, Channel 5’s longest running show Hotel Inspector and the BBC’s The Real Marigold Hotel. Already, their fledgling production company has delivered a number of ground-breaking projects for UK broadcasters and is currently in production on an exciting range of entertainment, features and documentary formats.

We will be chatting to Melanie and Andrew about their new venture and what their vision is for South Shore. We’ll be asking them about the culture of their company and the freelance talent they want to recruit and nurture and what their level of experience and success will bring to their new indie as they continue to make programmes that forge new TV ground.

Good evening. I'd love to hear if South Shore will implementing any initiatives to help class representation? 34% of the UK population are BELOW Working Class (‘Emergent Service Sector’ and ‘Precariat’) and are massively underrepresented.

The culture at South Shore sounds absolutely wonderful, and incredibly attractive. Question for Melanie and Andrew: would you be open to hiring someone looking to shift careers from academic research and features writing to tv, particularly docs, who is also from another country and very new to the UK? I know very little about British TV as a result, but I'm bringing the skills I have from my academic training and past experience and I'm raring to learn.

Do you think age would matter if a starter is in their 30s or 40s?

@Nahlael-Nemr I spent 20 years on and off trying to get in to TV. I didn't know anyone in the industry and never attended university. I should have given up but I didn't because there was nothing else I wanted to do. Keep going. You only fail when you stop trying.
