Good news for Scotland? Screen agency publishes a plan to grow full-time jobs & support freelancers in a more sustainable production hub https://www.thetalentmanager.com/blog/1311/screen-scotland-outlines-jobs-growth-roadmap

@RobinParker Screen Scotland setting a new benchmark for the rest of the UK? Good on them. At last someone with vision and a plan. About time someone showed some leadership.

Definitely something which the rest of the UK should follow with doing too in this current climate.

@RobinParker Yes and no. The plan/support is very welcome but there are still huge challenges to overcome, issues the broadcasters need to address. The commissioning crisis is biting harder in Scotland because even in the ‘good times’ less network commissions are awarded here. Some Scottish indies are renowned for hiring London based talent, even paying for their accommodation in Scotland. Not so the other way round! Many Scottish based freelancers have spent a fortune over the years travelling and being based down south. Meanwhile, BBC Nations and Regions funds are being allocated to productions, London indies with minimal presence in Scotland, that don't hire N&R based talent or conduct the post production here. Series 2 of The Traitors is a prime example of this and evidence the current mantra of “fewer, bigger, better" is really bad news for jobs in Scotland. Also, 91% of C4 spending is in London. Urgent discussion and, above all, change is required if working in tv is to become a sustainable career for more than a few in Scotland and other Nations & Regions.
