THREE REASONS WHY PRODUCTION MANAGERS LEAVE THE INDUSTRY

Three-quarters of those working in production management have seriously considered
leaving according to an ‘initial insights’ report of the findings of the Production
Managers Survey 2023. Yet, they enjoy working in TV and generally don’t complain
about the money. The three top reasons for discontent are: a lack of respect for the
role by others; the ‘always on’ work culture; and the ongoing feeling of being overloaded and under-resourced.

The findings emerge from a major new research initiative examining the experience
of work in production management in the UK’s TV industry. The study, led by The
Media Industries Research Group (MIRG) within Bournemouth University’s Centre for
Excellence in Media Practice, aims to shed light on the reasons for the current PM
talent shortage. Production Managers and Production Coordinators have become the
most difficult production roles to fill and is thought to have become ‘increasingly
marginalised and … less attractive’.

The project, entitled ‘Understanding the Production Management skills gap in UK TV’
is supported by the British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust. Initial insights from the survey can be accessed here: https://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/38531/
