I have used RDP Accountants as a freelancer in TV for about 15 years now, I found them via a personal recommendation from someone in the music industry.Cannot fault them, meticulous, do not cut corners! Easy to deal with. Efficient and make the process as easy as it can be and they are fair priced.

Crunch Accounting (online and on phone), always been great for me and pretty competitive pricing.

I use Catherine Elliott-Hunt at LEES Accountants (https://www.leesaccountants.co.uk/contact/). She was recommended to me by a fellow producer, and she's been great.

I use Fisher Phillips, who were recommended to me by a director I was working with some year ago. Very efficient and straight. Clearly in good odour with HMRC. - https://fisherphillips.co.uk/I deal with an accountant there named Nial Maher and did deal with Steve Frost, who I think is senior, but don't quote me.

Absolutely brilliant and helpful.

Most charted accountants will be able to help you set up a Ltd company. Just make sure they are registered. Mine costs about £75 per month for both personal and company accounts. http://www.portfolio-accountants.co.uk/

Hi Jess, I have a great guy who’s been doing my accounts for years - Saurabh Bedi - bedi@arb.accountants

I’ve used Paul Smith at Chamberlains in Solihull for over 30 years and he’s been excellent. He does Zoom as well these days and is probably cheaper than a big London firm. paul@chamberlains.tax

Are you a Ltd Company, or a sole trader who makes enough to be VAT registered? (Or think you want to become a Ltd Company?)If not, you could easily do it yourself - I did for years. Doing Self Assessment as a TV freelancer really isn't hard if you know the main principals and keep good records. (The system is designed for people to do it themselves!)You could always try it, and if you get badly stuck, then try an accountant. (But HMRC helplines are good, when you can get through to them)WARNING - Expect an accountant to try and persuade you to become a Ltd Company. They are not neutral in giving this advice - it's more work/money for them, but the advantages for the individual are actually finely balanced (a lot of tax incentives to do this have been closed up these days). Would be worth getting a range of opinions before becoming a Ltd company.

@AlexDwiar Just a sole trader who hasn't been freelance for a very long time. I've only ever done one UK tax return and I used an accountant as it was complicated due to living outside the country for half the year. Thanks for this advice, really helpful

Thank you everyone for taking the time to put your recommendations, very much appreciated

You can use any accountant - Freelancing in TV has few, if any, differences to freelancing in any other discipline. I would recommend you find one that is close to where you are. When I went Ltd I had to keep signing documents, which would have been made more difficult if they were remote.

Reg Fawlk is very good and works alongside a big media accountancy firm (David Grey) if you ever need anything fancier done. He is the only accountant I have ever had who does not ramp up their charges at two or three times the rate of inflation. Normally within three or four years you are paying a ransom. We have moved into and out of Limited Company status in and out of various plans for VAT. He modestly and simply managed it all and filed our personal returns. He is brilliant.. You need to think long-term, not who is cheapest as quoting low to start is whal almost all accountants do.reg@davidgreyco.comAllen
