Factual film-makers Maxine Gordon and Joseph Bushell have joined forces to launch an indie specialising in unscripted and scripted features.

The pair have unveiled Marauder Pictures and a debut slate that Invisible Front: Kherson, a feature doc about the Russian occupation of the Ukrainan city and its subsequent liberation, from Estonian director Ilmar Raag and co-produced with Ukrainian company DGTL RLGN and Estonia’s Traumfabrik.

A short, Baby, is screening at festivals, while Marauder has wrapped production on a second, Dirt. It is also developing Eight, a scripted thriller-fantasy about pregnancy psychosis.

Gordon’s credits include Channel 4’s Bafta-nominated 1999 series The Hip Hop Years, BBC2’s 2002 series Story of Jamaican Music and Animal Planet’s Animal Cops: Detroit.

Bushell was taught by Gordon at the Brit school and has since collaborated with her on Raindance Film Festival-nominated feature Dali and BFI Doc Society-backed documentary The Archive: Queer Nigerians.

Bushell said: “After dreaming of working in the film industry from an early age, I am very proud to be launching Marauder. We want to find the distinct voices in this industry to tell unique stories. The brand will represent quality, authenticity and originality and empower filmmakers to push the boundaries of storytelling.”

Gordon added: “Coming from an industry era when gatekeeping rather than nurturing talent was the norm, it led me into teaching up-and-coming filmmakers. I’m excited to be back now, galvanised by a new generation of creatives who unapologetically demand to tell diverse and untold stories.”
