BBC Films release My Father's Shadow was named outstanding debut by a British writer, producer or director at this year's Bafta film awards.
Debut writer-director Akinola Davies Jr and his brother and co-writer Wale Davies collected the award at last night's ceremony.
Produced by Element Pictures, Fatherland Pictures and Crybaby with the BFI and BBC Film, the film follows a family reunion during the 1993 Nigerian election. It was released in Nigeria last autumn ahead of its UK release this month.
Another BBC Films-backed title, Sentimental Value, took home the best film in a foreign language award.
Meanwhile, Dutch-German co-production Mr Nobody Against Putin, directed by David Borenstein and Pavel Talankin and commissiond by BBC Storyville commissioning editor Lucie Kon, and now available on iPlayer, was named best documentary.
Best British film went to Hamnet, which is co-produced by Call the Midwife producers Neal Street Pictures and What It Feels Like for a Girl producer Hera Pictures alongside Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment. The film's star, Jessie Buckley, was named best actress.
Another British movie, I Swear , provided the biggest upset of the night when actor Robert Aramayo beat favourites Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothy Chalamet to the best actor prize in addition to his Bafta Rising Star award. The film's casting director Lauren Evans also took home the casting award.
The event was overshadowed by the BBC apologising for including a racial slur involuntarily uttered by John Davidson, the subject of I Swear who lives with severe Tourette's, when Sinners actors Delroy Lindo and Michael B. Jordan took to the stage.
This was included despite a two-hour tx delay and was exacerbated by the BBC's edit of Akinola Davies Jr's acceptance speech.
TV viewers did not get to hear his concluding remarks: "To those watching at home - from Nigeria, London, Sudan. Free Palestine.”
Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another was the big winner with six awards including best picture, best director, and best supporting actor for Sean Penn.
