A lot of us have never been taught how to make television or video content. We just do it.... And over time, if you're lucky, you pick things up.

I've been picking things up for 30 years…documentaries, factual entertainment, news... and somewhere along the way I’ve managed to accumulate a lot of knowledge about telling stories on screen; knowledge that mostly lives in my head and never gets written down.

So big news... I've done something about it.

Next week I'm launching a YouTube channel called The Story First with everything I know about video storytelling, for anyone who’s making television, YouTube videos, or branded content.

I'll be honest, I also wanted to understand YouTube for myself. To see how it works, what the audience expects, what it takes to build something from scratch. I've been working on it since last autumn and I'm pressing 'go' next Tuesday 25 August.

There are five episodes ready to go from day one. Thanks to @LorraineWant for editing series 1!

If you work in TV, make video content, or are just starting out — come and take a look.
