I edited Episode 2: Out of Control.

Spending months inside this material was a revealing experience. What struck me most was the texture of it. It felt like watching a group of people who had all gone to the same boarding school playing at government. Head teachers, governors, head boys, prefects and house captains. The rules were understood by everyone inside the institution and nobody else.

The most surprising editorial discovery was that for many of the key players this was a game. The goal was to win. What happened after winning was someone else's problem.

In the edit I found myself laughing at moments in the rushes and then being terrified at the same time. That tension is in the material itself. Boris Johnson puts it best:

"We didn't have it. We didn't have it. We didn't have the plan for what to do next, but we didn't think it was our job to have a plan."

The work in the edit was holding that revelation. Balancing the order of events. Finding the moments where the humour breaks through without losing the weight of what was actually happening to the country.

In the edit you form a close and intense working relationship with your PD. Mine was Olivia Brogan — a PD of real intelligence and tenacity who doggedly stood up every story and never let an account go unverified. That rigour is what accuracy looks like in practice.

At the screening last week, Gisela Stuart and Andy Wigmore, both central figures in the Leave campaign, were in the room. Both said independently that Episode 2 was exactly as things happened. When the people who lived it say that, you know the work was worth it.
