Last week at Everyman in Clifton, Bristol I popped along as an Royal Television Society member to the Season 2 Preview Screening of #RIVALS from The Walt @Disney Company Hulu Happy Prince and @ITV
A very proud audience made up of Bristol and South West based crew and of course The Bottle Yard Studios Filming in England and the Mayor of The West of England, Helen Goodwin, were all there rooting for the region.
Hands down the best preview I've been to! hosted by Angellica Bell with cast members, Katherine Parkinson and Annabel Scholey, Also Alex Lamb (Executive Producer), Eliza Mellor (Producer), Ray Holman (Costume Designer), and Joel Holmes (Location Manager)
Absolute delight to return to the world of Rutshire and bask in the female gaze. It's startling just how well this IP handles female desire, and it of course is all down to the exceptional work of author, Dame Gilly Cooper.
I feel very tuned into the differences between male gaze television and female gaze television of late, discussed at length with Eleanor Greene in our recent podcast. It's something that didn't quite work as well for Bridgeton but here it really does.
I often wonder if the last 25 years of depicting intimate scenes between men and women as transactional, often violent, and one sided have had an effect on younger generations. And this drive for 'steamy romance' that was a staple of the 80s and 90s is why there's a spike in nostalgia viewing, and for preferring to remain single.
In the face of the manosphere, we need more emotionally intelligent female driven desire shows that illustrate how to be a partner, and not a project.
Bravo to all behind the production 🤗
You can watch Season 2 from today on Disney+
Weekend sorted 😎
What did you think of S2 Ep1? Will you go back for more!
