TV Editor for hire!

Freelancing in UK television feels like a very uncertain place to be right now. Projects stall, jobs disappear, and many multi-talented people are stepping away from an industry they’ve invested years of their lives in, and it’s made me reflect on my own journey.

I began my career as a self-shooting Producer/Director for many of the ITV companies. After a conversation with a well-known TV journalist I became interested in editing as a way to fully understand how programmes are constructed. I persuaded my then boss at ITV to send me on editing courses, certain the knowledge would feed back into directing and shooting.

It worked, perhaps too well because once I was “the editor”, that became my industry ‘label’, though I have continued producing and directing my own projects.

Alongside television I’ve also written music (for most of my life), and my work can be found in the PRS production music library called ‘Noisebiscuits’, with some very talented and multi-skilled composers.

My belief is that editors bring more than just technical skill. We have spent years thinking about story, structure, pictures, performance and rhythm, meeting the demands of commissioners and audiences alike. My experiences of directing, shooting, music, and shaping narratives, reinforce a rigorous and artful approach to storytelling that runs right through the whole programme-making process.

I’m an Editor for hire and available for work. In the meantime I’m keeping busy, developing film ideas, producing my own short documentaries, creating content for social media, and always composing.

If you need a very experienced editor, someone who understands the storytelling process from shoot to post, I’d be very happy to talk.
