Persuing nonpayment of a freelancer invoice

Added 11 months ago

I worked for a Canadian Production Team last year. The Production was put on hold & I was asked combine my last 2 invoices, (1 of which had already been submitted & was due for payment). Since October 2024, they have made excuses about the accounts with the funder. This week they have told me I need to pursue the funder, but the funder is telling me my contract is with the production company. I am owed £4,200. What can I do?

@AnnabelNew Sorry Annabel it's a horrible situation you're in. If your contract was with the production company then it's they and not the funder that owes you. Check your contract and keep writing to the production company detailing the terms you agreed. You can threaten invoicing for interest on late payment and finally you can threaten legal action. It's possible the company's gone bust but don't give up, keep pressing. Don't be fobbed off by accounts dept, contact the CEO. Good luck.

Thanks Sheryl. My contract was with the production company, but my invoices are all addressed to the funder, including the ones at the start of the project that were paid. I sent them directly to the funder.
I have contacted the CEO of the funder with the email chain, which contains several emails from both the Exec who worked for the funder and the production company from Sept 24 - May 25, assuring me that I would be paid once the audit and final payments were concluded in May 2025.

@AnnabelNew that's complicated then but sounds like the funder then owes you. Keep at them.

@AnnabelNew if you have a contract, I would take legal action. But if you don't, then you risk not being paid at all.

@AnnabelNew are you part of a union like the NUJ? They could give you legal advice or direct you to the right people. Sorry you are going through this.
