About Me
I've worked with Sheryl on many prime time documentaries (singles and series) for BBC, C4 and my own passion projects over many years. If documentary editing is a combination of craft skill, imagination and dedication then Sheryl's got those in spades. Whether it's obs doc or presenter-led, or with archive, her ability to fashion scenes with life, energy and emotion is a joy to behold and it's why I return to her. An astute judge of story and character, I also know that she'll find the right rhythm and pacing when cutting. I am, however, equally drawn to the rigour with which she approaches a project at its inception. I know that even if I've forgotten something she won't have missed it. When left to her own devices I'm confident that everything's being taken care of. Early in the edit, she can evaluate how well the rushes will sustain so you can tell if more work or another element is likely needed, or indeed if something is best dropped. I will always return to Sheryl.
I had the pleasure of having Sheryl on the team on around 20 music documentaries during my time as Production Exec and then Head of Production in BBC Music TV between 2003 and 2020. She is a hugely talented and creative editor. The music films she cut are some of the finest of that genre ever produced for BBC2 and BBC4. Sheryl is extremely hard working and reliable. She worked regularly with Jeremy Marre whom she already knew but we also often matched her with directors she’d not worked with before and she quickly gained their total trust and respect. Sheryl is a delight to work with. She was our number one choice of editor.
I have had the pleasure of working with Sheryl on several different series, with very different subjects and moods. Yet her approach and attitude is always the same - professional, warm, humane and intelligent. She is strongly story driven and attentive to the director’s vision while never being afraid to put forward her own view of the best way to make the programme, whether it’s sombre or a hoot. She has a rigorous and focussed approach, yet always cuts with a twinkle in her eye, searching out that pearl in the rushes which will make the audience laugh, smile or wonder. I warmly recommend her! And I’m looking forward to our next gig together.
I worked with Sheryl on Laura Kuenssberg: State of Chaos - she was a fantastic editor to work with and very dedicated to the series. She brought so much to the project and it was a real pleasure working with her!
I worked with Sheryl remotely during the pandemic on two occasions. I was across two suites at the same time and because Sheryl has a meticulous attention to detail and strong editorial instincts you can leave her to get on with it. You can trust that she’s scoured the rushes for the best sync and prettiest shots. Her cuts are beautifully finessed even at a rough cut stage and her use of archive stills in terms of pacing and moves is often pointed out by Execs as being the model to follow.
