I set out to speak up for screen talent in Scotland and, by extension, the other UK Nations and the English Regions who are facing the same challenges.BBC Network's recent announcement about commissioning in the Nations is a very positive step in the right direction. But there's lots more work to do before there's meaningful change. It's hard not to think that with this change in approach the BBC is effectively admitting that it gamed the system on an industrial scale for decades and in doing so severely undermined Scotland's TV production capacity. And, that this is why they now think there's a lack of talent here, careers were stalled and curtailed because the BBC focused on Scottish qualification rather than Scottish origination.Put it another way…imagine a London Exec looking at two CVs. One has network credits, the other, from the Nations, doesn’t. Who gets the job? Our research shows less than 38% of Directors hired to work on BBC MoL Titles allocated as Scottish are based in Scotland (2023).For an organisation that makes much about the importance of trust that is almost unforgivable. The BBC has a lot of trust building to do, without further delay, and actions speak louder than words.https://lnkd.in/e2YNqxy9BBC Ofcom The Scottish Government Department for Culture, Media and Sport Directors UK Screen Scotland Creative Scotland Media Cymru Northern Ireland Screen Pact Bectu Unscripted TV Union (part of Bectu) ITV Channel 4 Channel 5 SUSST - Speaking Up for Scotland's Screen Talent #Scotland #Television #Film #Broadcasting
