Talented TM-ers on TV - THIS WEEK Davina McCall: Sex, Myths & the Menopause", Wed 12th May 9pm on C4.
This week we hear from @LindaSands , Producer/Director:
I learnt everything on this show - I’m in my early 40s and I knew nothing about the menopause and I thought "why have I not spoken about this with friends?”. Davina was menopausal at 44, we should be talking about this, but we seem to live in a culture that values youth, especially in TV and menopause tends to get swept under the carpet. It's important to understand that the menopause is a mid-life thing, its not a granny thing. Women now live a 1/3 of their lives post menopause and it's really important to flag this in the film.
Finestripe, who made the show, are a company run by 2 women - Katie Lander & Sue Summers - who are strong, creative & supportive. I’ve been a PD for over 10 years & this is honestly one of the best companies I have ever worked for! Sarah Hey, the commissioner at Channel 4 questioned and supported at every turn - what a team. I had to take my 2 year old to the interview as we had just moved home to Glasgow,I was surrounded by boxes & I hadn’t got childcare set up yet but the interviews were taking place that day and only that day. In hindsight, it was the best decision I ever made!
My top TV tip is making people care is one of the most important things I retain in the edit. We refine the script & the structure again & again but retaining that emotion is so important!
