SOME NEWS FROM SMTJ
After nearly 9 years, Share My Telly Job (SMTJ) will close at the end of this month.
SMTJ was created to help people work more flexibly in TV & Film, with job-sharing at its core. Since then job-sharing has gone from being “something for the Mums” to being open to anyone, for all sorts of reasons. It is proven to bring huge benefits to productions in all genres.
From Lou’s founding blog in the midst of maternity leave, SMTJ grew to become a team of four brilliant women - Lou, Nat, Michelle and Rowan - who had all experienced first hand the detrimental impact that a lack of workplace flexibility could have on their family life and their TV career. Behind the scenes we had Kathryn, Cath and Georgia ensuring everything went smoothly.
We’ve published academic research articles, designed and run ground breaking training and mentoring schemes, spoken at and hosted webinars and conferences. We’ve helped change policy, developed an app working with the University of York, Harvard and MIT and met some incredibly inspiring people. Most importantly, we’ve helped make changes that have enriched and supported hundreds, if not thousands of freelancers to achieve a better work-life balance.
Lou made the tough decision to step down from SMTJ earlier this year as running and developing the business whilst keeping a foot in the precarious world of freelancing with young kids and ailing parents to care for, became an impossible set of plates to spin - a story many of you probably know all too well.
After experiencing some questionable treatment in recent telly jobs, she’s decided to continue to try and improve things for freelancers and will be working with a new team over at @thetimeproject_tv , launching a brand new app early next year.
Nat has returned back to full-time TV work after a few years of job-sharing alongside five years with SMTJ. Her idea, Locked Down and Locked Out, remains hugely influential in industry and academia, and was a key collaboration with Rowan and the hundreds of Telly Mums who took part – just one of the ways SMTJ will continue to have a real world impact.
Michelle and Rowan have a new company, ReelTime Media, which will offer training and consultancy to support healthy workplace culture, such as how to implement practical solutions for hiring and retaining experienced, diverse talent. Website coming soon!
SMTJ’s renewed website will be finished soon and will continue to be a free resource for anyone wanting to work more flexibly. The Talent Manager job-sharing function will be the place to go to find job-share partners and roles from now on!
All of the @smtj.tv emails will be active until the end of 2023.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years. There have been so many wonderful people championing SMTJ behind the scenes. We are incredibly proud to have been part of something great.
With love, Team SMTJ
