Finestripe Productions offer to direct ‘ Davina McCall: Sex, Mind and The Menopause’ looking at the hidden scandal of hundreds of thousands of women leaving the workforce piqued my interest from the get-go.

I’ve made docs & investigative films that shine a light on trafficked women, refugees and child poverty, which have made a difference and influenced policy. For this second Davina film, which had to be bold and create noise for the Channel and change for women, I drew on my doc experience and journalistic gut instinct honed over 20 years.

I pursued access to a women’s prison as was intrigued how front line women working behind bars were coping with their menopause. Having their positive testimonies in the film has the potential to influence other employers who hold the power to effect change for women at work.

Sadly some women told me their experiences were so bad that they felt their lives were at stake. That was incredibly sobering to hear and as a director there was a lot to consider such as to film one of the stories anonymously to protect the contributor’s identity.

Such a vital, pivotal and sensitive film would have been impossible to make without strong collaboration and commitment from everyone in our tiny and overly talented team. We have a film that we're incredibly proud of and hope will effect change for women across the UK. That’s the power of documentary and why I love directing films!
