TM HUB WEBINAR 📣 "UNDERLYING HEALTH CONDITION - How can TV stop failing disabled people?"

WHEN: WEDNESDAY 2ND FEB, 7PM.

Your opportunity to hear from, and put your questions to, writer Jack Thorne (Help, His Dark Materials, Kiri) and writer/actor Genevieve Barr (The Silence, Liar) about the challenges facing disabled, deaf and neurodiverse people in film & TV.

Delivering the Edinburgh TV Festival's MacTaggart speech last summer, Jack launched Underlying Health Condition, a lobbying group to champion access for people with the conditions working in film & TV. Their subsequent report revealed some shocking statistics about how ill-equipped much of the industry is to make workspaces accessible to all. Jack and Genevieve will discuss their findings and the conversations they have had with broadcasters and production companies and will look at what needs to happen next - and how all of us can help.

Love the work that Jack and Genevieve are doing. I'm trying to achieve the same with Inclusivity Films and iNCLUSIVE Talent. I've come across so many things that exclude disabled people and it needs to change. TV has the power to help make societal change. And Changing Places! Yes! We have used this with my son and they're life changing. Should be everywhere

I appreciate that you are working in scripted but I understand that although for unscripted freelancers barriers are similar recommendations for change differ. Can you tell us about the difference?

Disability has been left out and disabled talent left behind. Thanks so much to Jack for campaigning on this front. Organisations like UHC, DANC and DDPTV are vital in taking this to the film and TV industry and lead to lasting change.

Incentivising inde's by involving commissioning editors to encourage companies to take on more disabled cast and crew at the early commissioning stage, as the Bbc Elevate scheme is doing, is a great idea.

I had a client in theatre and they wanted to split them from the other actors as the stage entrances weren't accessible! This is an issue all round.

what can i do to help not being a manager or a booker of people? i feel particularly cross about the wall between the hearing and deaf community and want to know what to do. i have conversations about it.

So wonderful to hear this topic being discussed as so often panels only discuss it from the POV of on-screen representation. Personally, I've never worked with another disabled person. Also realised very quickly on jobs that it is a case of people assuming 'she can't do this' or 'they can do that' when it comes to different tasks but never ever is it 'What can we do so that you can do this task?' and sometimes it can be a minor adjustment that means I can carry it out.

I am a former TV news reporter and now produce doc and factual TV. I have hearing loss - about 50 per cent in each ear since birth . But wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 30s so I just got by with a lot of lipreading and saying can you say that again a lot. WHen I was diagnosed I still didn't mention it as I did not want to be discriminated against. These days many employers on TM say how much they welcome applciations from all these groups but I still rarely disclose anything.

Sometimes they say they will guarantee at least a phonecall or interview if you have the experience -
and so Imight then disclose my hearing loss. I can honestly say I have never ever had a phone call let alone a job when I have mentioned that I have a disability!!

One of the things I bring to the table a someone wiht hearing porblems is I say - please turn donw the music and bring up the script/voices - noeone is going to be able to hear what these people are saying and what they are saying is important

Thanks very much - very interesting - especially about the idea that people wiht underlying health conditions did not really count when it came to the numbers dying. Chillilng but when you put it like that it is undeniable sadly

Thank you so much for this Webinar. I thought my career was on the up and up until I got cancer, age 30, and it's so hard having to keep constantly having conversations about my needs as a result of ongoing treatment. I gave up on TV and started doing corporate, but even those gigs are few and far between. I look forward to seeing things change.
