Basement Films’ doc Gaza: Doctors Under Attack, which was dropped by the BBC and subsequently picked up by Channel 4, is in the running for best single documentary in this year’s RTS Programme Awards.

The BBC commissioned the doc and initially planned to air it in February last year, ultimately shelving it in June over impartiality concerns, with Basement founder Ben de Pear accusing the corporation of having “stymied and silenced” journalists reporting from Gaza. C4 aired the doc soon afterwards.

The nomination comes a year after the RTS bestowed a special award for journalists in Gaza just weeks after the BBC pulled a previous doc, Gaza: How to Survive a War Zone (Hoyo Films), from iPlayer over impartiality concerns.

The doc is up against fellow C4 doc Groomed: a National Scandal (Candour Productions) and Netflix’s Grenfell: Uncovered (Rogan Productions) on this year’s shortlist.

Meanwhile, Sky dominates the documentary series category, with Bibaa & Nicole: Murder in the Park (True Vision) and Boyzone: No Matter What (Curious Films) – both of which have been the subject of Talent Manager masterclasses – squaring off with BBC2’s Murder 24/7 (Expectation).

Another Talent Manager masterclass show, C4’s Go Back to Where You Came From (Minnow Films), makes the popular formatted factual shortlist alongside fellow C4 show The Jury: Murder Trial (Screendog Productions) and ITV1’s The Assembly (Rockerdale Studios).

Studio Lambert occupies two of the three places on the entertainment and reality shortlist for its BBC hits Race Across the World and The Celebrity Traitors, alongside E4’s Married at First Sight UK (CPL Productions).

Meanwhile, Netflix drama Adolescence (Warp/Plan B) adds six RTS nominations to its already lengthy list of industry acclaim, including best writer – drama for creators Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, and limited series and single drama.

The winners will be announced at the ceremony on Tuesday 24 March.
