Rogan Productions’ Netflix doc Grenfell: Uncovered and Candour Productions’ Channel 4 film The Dunblane Tapes have each landed two nominations on this year’s Grierson Awards shortlist.
Olaide Sadique’s double-Bafta winning Grenfell film and Anna Hall and Niamh Kennedy’s Dunblane doc are both in the running for best single documentary – domestic, and best history documentary.
Competition in the best single doc – domestic category comes from Marc C4 doc Molly vs the Machines (Silver’s Snowstorm Productions/Storyboard Studios/Marc Silver Ltd and Dan Reed’s C4 film One Day in Southport (Amos Pictures).
Meanwhile, the history shortlist also features Cristina Constantini’s National Geographic film Sally (Story Syndicate/Muck Media) and Jack Warrender’s BBC2 doc Children of the Blitz (Minnow Films).
With its x doc The Secret of Me up for best science and natural history documentary category, Rogan is one of three indies with three nominations, alongside Passion Pictures (Turner: the Secret Sketchbooks, See No Evil and Wild London) and Curious Films (Confessions of a Brain Surgeon, Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth and AI Confidential with Hannah Fry).
Contesting the best documentary are Passion’s C4 two-parter See No Evil, Basement Films’ BBC2 series Hostage, Candle True Stories’ Netflix series Should I Marry a Murderer? and BBC Studios’ BBC2 three-parter The Mother of All Cons.
Female directors have picked up 31 nominations this year, with men securing 39, proportionally in line with last year’s 35:42 ratio.
