Sisters Mona and Tanya Qureshi, who have commissioned behind some of the biggest recent British dramas, are teaming up to lead an international division of Barbie actor Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap.
Set to launch in January, LuckyChap International will collaborate with “unique voices” working in scripted television in the UK and Europe.
Based in London, the company is a joint venture with French media company Mediawan, which added the European arm of another Hollywood actor-led US company, Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment to a growing drama portfolio that also includes Slow Horses indie See Saw Films and Riot Women producer Drama Republic.
The Qureshis have been named joint managing directors of LuckyChap International and will oversee creative and day-to-day operations.
Mona joins from Netflix UK, where she was director of scripted series, working on shows including global smash Adolescence.
She was previously a BBC drama commissioning editor, ordering shows including BBC2’s The English and John Le Carre adaptation The Little Drummer Girl.
Her other production credits include another Le Carre'sThe Night Manager, Small Island and FilmFour cinema release Brick Lane.
Tanya joins from the BBC, where she has been a drama commissioning editor for the past four years and was previously head of comedy.
Her BBC credits include Riot Women, Ludwig, Amandaland and I May Destroy You.
In a statement, Mona and Tanya said: “We’ve always shared a deep love of storytelling, so getting to build something together at LuckyChap feels like a dream.
“As sisters, we’ve cheered each other on through our individual careers, and now we get to combine everything we’ve learned to grow this next chapter – literally and figuratively – side by side.”
They hailed LuckyChap’s “heart and mischief” and championing of “distinctive voices and bold ideas”.
Founded by Robbie in 2014 with fellow Australian Tom Ackerley and British producers Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, LuckyChap has produced many of the actor’s films, including I, Tonya, Barbie and Birds of Prey, plus all three of Emerald Fennell’s movies including her upcoming Wuthering Heights.
Its TV output to date has included Netflix’s The Maid and Sirens and Hulu’s Dollface and Mike.
