HUB MONDAY POLL 👀

GB News launched at the weekend, the first major new news channel in over 30 years. Is this a welcome development, on the basis that more news is good news, bringing more jobs and a sign of a healthy TV economy? Or is that outweighed by concerns it will herald a Fox-style editorialising that will tarnish the whole of UK broadcast news?

While Andrew Neill has, in his time, been a sturdy interviewer, he has sadly become a victim of his own prejudices, as his Twitter outbursts often reveal. Objective and impartial reporting is already under threat, and I don't think the distinction between reporting and opinion will be made on GB News.

I guess one question is whether - in a time when Facebook & Twitter have already created 'echo chambers' in which people consume news - the likes of a GB News will have the sort of impact Fox did on the US news ecology.

@MattBorn I think it's worth remembering that simply because of the way people consume information - ALL of our press pander to their likes, and they're ALL echo chambers. So if we have one more, especially one that denotes it won't work the same way, it's actually a good thing. We need varying opinions and stories, not more of the same. Tim Berners Lee summed it up perfectly when he described his disappointment in the way the web has gone since he invented it.

With all our press delivering in the 'same format', the same content with different presenters, none asking the tricky and uncomfortable questions that need asking - then that's far worse than having someone with strong views ask those questions. Viewers need to strike a balance, and not cling on to one newsroom, otherwise it just becomes an echo-chamber for them which is about as helpful as listeria.
