We're delighted that Little Gem was nominated for the RTS Programme Awards 2021 for Surviving the Virus: My Brother & Me - a doc we made for BBC ONE last year. Our team did a brilliant job in testing circumstances and it’s great to see the film recognised in this way. Congrats to other nominees and winners @JackRampling @HelenLittleboy @HelenCrampton @EliHardy. And of course huge thanks to Chris and Xand Van Tulleken for trusting us with their story.

Congrats on the RTS. Great film. Really reminded of how much uncer*****y there was around Covid at the time. How was it recruiting shooters? Were you having to vet people based on age and health background? Were you having to draft filming safety protocols from scratch?

@MattBorn Hiring the team was a challenge, partly because everyone was in a state of flux with projects starting and stopping all over the place. We were careful about people’s health and background but our main focus was on making sure that the team were well-equipped with the right kind of PPE for the location they were filming in. And, yes, we drafted our Health and Safety protocols from scratch, evolving them as we progressed.
What was your greatest challenge in making this show - not just with the restrictions that COVID-19 brought to film making but in the direct contact you and the crew had with the virus?

The greatest challenge was keeping the team safe, both physically and emotionally. We did a psych session with an experienced psychologist and the whole team (on zoom) before we started filming to prepare the team for the sorts of situations – and emotions – they would face once filming was underway.

And we worked closely with the hospital staff to ensure there was no viral cross-contamination from one area to another. At the end of each day, our kit was given an ‘ultraviolet wash’ using specialist hospital kit to ensure that there was no residual virus on the camera from one day to the next. And we drew up Covid-19 filming protocols which covered many other aspects of the production.
