TALENTED TM-ers this week - "Do Black Lives Still Matter?" BBC3/Century - available to watch now on the iPlayer
Meet @CharlieMole, Prod/Dir on this series & his 'making of' the show:
The series was a new format created for BBC 3 with new talent presenting for the first time. It was a challenging programme to make because the brief was for a current affairs series with fresh journalism & revelation, but to be packaged and presented in a punchy, vibrant style that didn't feel like a typical current affairs programme. I had to think carefully about a coherent style for the 3 programmes. I opted to try & make it feel & look as glossy & colourful as possible. I tried to watch a lot of music videos in pre-production & thought hard about how to inject each scene with colour & style eg I used ice-lights when lighting paired with a variety of coloured gels - they are easy to travel with & give the crisp neon look I was after.
As the presenter is a grime artist, I wanted to try & make a feature of his ability to perform. So I decided to shoot the piece-to-cameras at the very end of the production & didn't shoot any as "reactions" when filming. This allowed me to carefully think about location for each of them & to script & light them as carefully as possible so as to make them feel polished & premium-looking.
As ever with TV production, the key is in the planning. Always think through everything & try to visualise how things will look long before picking up a camera #talentedtm
