Finished this last night. So much to process. Some of the set ups are contrived but the complexity of the dialogue and characters is astounding, particularly Clive. David Morrissey deserves a lot of credit for managing to find shades of humanity in a monster. With Reform councils banning LGBTQ+ teaching and defunding Pride events, and right-wing billionaires tightening their grip on social media, it’s a stark, brutal reminder of where we’re heading. We might already be there. What’s portrayed so effectively here is the pack mentality of toxic masculinity combined with the impact of social media - it’s driving people to acts of rage and violence against communities that have nothing to do with why their lives aren’t great. As the show makes clear, it’s the Trump/Farage effect - culture wars are designed to divide us, to make us hate our neighbours so we don’t come together to tackle the real problem: corrupt billionaires who are rinsing us all.
