advertising within programmes is neanderthal - to compete with SVODs, ad funded PSBs need to completely change their structure - the more we watch amazing drama, and incredible doc series and feature docs with no ads - the less appealing shows with intrusive advertising breaks become.

Hi @StephenShearman - I'd be interested to know how the US networks are changing in light of competition from streamers, especially as advertising on US network shows is far more intrusive and - I'm guessing - the market is that much more 'mature'. Is it leading to a sharper fall off in viewers? Or are they coming up with new revenue streams within the existing structure - eg product placement (hard to imagine that could make up the shortfall though), more sponsored strands...?

The changes are seismic Matt - since Fox/Nat Geo was bought by Disney, Scripps/Discovery has just merged with Warner Bros, Smithsonian was snapped up CBS/Viacom - there are no old-style cable service independents left - it's two tier at the moment with both discovery and nat geo running both SVOD and old style cable channel services - but for how much longer? It's fascinating - and exciting times to be a programme maker - so many avenues out there for content producers.

and the thing is what is driving it all is competition - HBO, SKY, NETFLIX, AMAZON, APPLE - all these new broadcasters are desperate for premium factual content - Discovery and Nat Geo and even Smithsonian are scrambling to catch up
