🎬 Editing is sometimes about breaking the rules a little.

I worked on a long-running series for several years. I cut four of the five seasons. The fifth one was the final chapter, and everyone knew there wouldn’t be another.

Over that time we became a very close team. There was a lot of trust. The crew trusted my editing instincts, and I always felt I was part of something bigger than just assembling footage.

It just so happened that the very last scene of the very last episode was filmed on the final day of shooting.

After the final take, the creative producer walked into frame and started thanking the team. The actors were hugging, laughing, congratulating each other. None of it was scripted. The camera just kept rolling.

It felt real. Warm. Honest.

When the footage reached the edit, I had this thought. What if we keep this moment? Right after the final scene. Just before the credits. Just to let the ending breathe a little longer.

To show that these characters are played by real people.

That behind the screen there’s a team who genuinely cared.

That sometimes a project is not just about work, but about shared emotion.

I honestly didn’t expect it to stay in the final cut. I mostly added it as a small act of mischief, thinking it would just make the producers and director smile during the viewing.

But they loved it. The director supported it. The platform supported it.

And that unscripted moment made it all the way to the master and went on air.

Editing isn’t only structure and story logic.

Sometimes it’s about feeling the moment.

And yes, sometimes it’s okay to break the rules a little.
