Careers Aren’t Linear. Neither Is Confidence.

We like to talk about careers as if they move neatly upwards.

One role leads to the next, confidence builds, experience stacks, and everything just… progresses.

But in reality? Careers zig-zag. Confidence dips. Momentum stalls.
And sometimes you feel rock-solid one month and full of doubt the next — even with years of experience behind you.

i say this from personal experience.

I’ve learned that confidence isn’t something you achieve and keep forever.
It’s something that ebbs and flows — often in direct response to workload, timing, life, health, and the industry around you.

You can: – be brilliant at your job
– have delivered great projects
– be well-liked and respected
– and still feel unsure when the work slows or the landscape shifts

That doesn’t mean you’re failing.
It means you’re human.

The mistake we make is assuming a wobble means regression.

It doesn’t. It usually means you’re in a transition — between roles, between seasons, between versions of yourself.

The people I admire most aren’t the ones who’ve never doubted themselves.
They’re the ones who’ve learned to keep moving with the doubt — without letting it rewrite their story.

So if your confidence feels louder on some days than others — that’s normal.
If your career path doesn’t look like a straight line — good. Straight lines are boring.

What matters is not constant certainty, but resilience. Not unbroken confidence, but self-belief that returns — again and again — even after a knock.

Careers aren’t linear. Neither is confidence. Both grow through experience, reflection, and the courage to keep going when things feel less clear.

Here is to wavy lines ♡
