The Cost of Publishing: Why I Said No to £2,300 for 'The Venice Trap'

When publishing my latest book, The Venice Trap, I was faced with a critical business decision: Self-Publishing vs. Hybrid Publishing.

I was offered two separate Hybrid Publishing deals, which initially sounded like a supportive partnership. However, the financial reality was a mandatory personal contribution of £2,300 towards the cost of producing the book.
My Verdict? I chose the Self-Publishing route via Amazon KDP.

With modern, accessible design platforms like Canva, authors can now create truly professional, standout book covers without needing to funnel thousands into a hybrid deal.

For me, the value proposition of these specific hybrid offers simply did not add up against the creative control and financial benefits of self-publishing. So far, the self-publishing path has proven to be the better option from a value for money perspective.
