💘 Job Interviews Are Basically First Dates… So Who Messages First?

Let’s talk about the moment after a job interview — the quiet, slightly awkward limbo where you’re trying to work out your next move.

Because honestly? Interviews can feel a lot like first dates 🤣

You show up.
You present the best version of yourself.
You try to be confident but not cocky, warm but not waffly, honest but not oversharing your life story.
And once it’s over, you’re left with the big question: do I message first… or wait for them to reach out?

This is where so many freelancers panic — not because we’re desperate, but because the etiquette is unclear.

We all want to show enthusiasm for a project without sounding like we’re perched on the edge of our chair refreshing Gmail every 30 seconds.

So here’s my stance:

👉 Following up after an interview is not desperation. Following up is professionalism.

In our world — production, broadcast, events, experiential — communication is the backbone of everything we do.
We keep clients updated.
We keep teams aligned.
We keep workflows moving.
We don’t just sit quietly and hope telepathy does the rest.

So follow up makes sense!

A strong follow-up looks like this:

“Thank you again for the conversation. I really enjoyed learning more about the project, and if my experience aligns with what you need, I’d be excited to be involved. Happy to provide anything further.”

Warm. Confident. Clear.
No begging. No panic. No 17 emojis of a sweating face.

The reality is:

💛 Interest is not unprofessional.
💛 Curiosity is not clingy.
💛 Confidence is not neediness.

And just like dating…

If they want you, they’ll come back to you. If they don’t, you haven’t lost anything — you’ve gained clarity.

And if they ghost you?
Well, that’s probably a sign of the communication style you narrowly avoided.

So yes — send the follow-up.
Not because you’re trying to convince them…
…but because you respect the process, value the role, and understand your worth.
