New Trend: Bogus Firms Using Temp Staff to Hire Vehicles
A worrying new trend is emerging across the UK, with organised offenders setting up convincing “copycat” businesses that imitate legitimate firms — complete with cloned websites, false insurance policies, and fake reviews. These operations are not small-scale scams; they are structured, deliberate attempts to infiltrate legitimate industries using deception, fraud, and manipulation.
How the Scam Works
The bogus firms are exploiting recruitment agencies to source temporary staff under false pretences. The “temps” are offered short-term employment, often under the guise of courier, logistics, or waste collection roles. They are then instructed to attend vehicle hire locations — typically across the South of England — to collect vehicles in their name on behalf of what appears to be a genuine employer.
Once the vehicles are obtained, the temporary contracts end. The employee walks away believing the job has finished, while the fraudsters retain the vehicles and vanish. The trail then points directly back to the innocent worker, leaving both the recruitment firm and the vehicle hire company with serious losses and little recourse.
