💼 The Skills We Don’t List on Our CVs
I’ve spent more hours writing, editing, and re-wording my CV than I care to admit — trying to make 15 years of production experience sound both fun and hireable.
But here’s the thing...
Half the skills that make you brilliant at your job aren’t the ones you can bullet-point anyway.
No one lists:
• 🧯 “Can stop a full-scale meltdown with one calm sentence.”
• 🎭 “Translates client chaos into actionable call sheets.”
• 🧘 “Stays zen while someone screams about tablecloth colours.”
• 🍕 “Knows everyone’s dietary preferences and how to fix the pizza order when they all change their mind.”
• 💬 “Therapist, travel agent, and human spreadsheet — often all before 10am.”
Because being a producer — or any freelancer, really — is a masterclass in soft skills: empathy, diplomacy, logistics, humour, emotional regulation, and caffeine management. ☕
We don’t just manage projects; we manage people.
We hold the line between creative vision and actual possibility.
We’re the bridge between panic and progress.
And yet, CVs don’t capture any of that.
They don’t show that you were the one who kept the show running when the weather collapsed, when the client cried, when the generator broke, when the agency changed the brief mid-shoot.
They don’t show the endless quiet wins — the diplomacy, the heart, the “don’t worry, I’ve got this” moments that make the chaos work.
So maybe the next time we’re asked to “describe our key skills,” we should say:
> “I make the impossible possible, politely.”
Because that, my friends, is the real job description. 💪✨
