“So sorry, Lou — we decided to go with someone we already knew.”
I get it. Sometimes companies have to advertise externally. It’s policy. Process. HR box-ticking.
But when you already know who’s getting hired… why are we all pretending?
Because surely the point of advertising a role externally is to widen the net, find new people, fresh ideas, different experience. Not to send the same fish around the same pond. 🎣
If we were just honest about which roles were genuinely open, we’d all save time (and a small fortune in caffeine). ☕
Applicants wouldn’t waste hours writing personal cover letters that no one reads.
And companies would get fewer — but better — applications.
And while we’re at it…
👻 It’s nearly Halloween. Ghosting candidates still isn’t cool.
🍬 At least leave sweets.
And that other line:
The creative industries are small. But they don’t grow if we only ever hire the same names.
That’s my tuppence worth for today. 💅
Now, if anyone needs me, I’ll be rewording my “transferable skills” for the 88th time.
