Production has its glamorous moments… risk assessments are not one of them. Unless, of course, you think hard hats and hi-viz are a vibe. 🦺👷♀️
I’ll admit it though — I actually enjoy writing them. Whether it’s for a broadcast recording, a live event, an activation, or even just a simple recce, risk assessments are the unsung heroes of production.
They’re what protect us from the unexpected. Every hazard — from the tiniest trip hazard to the biggest live broadcast challenge — needs to be thought through. Not because we expect disaster, but because if it’s not identified, insurance often won’t cover it. And when the stakes are high, that’s not a risk worth taking.
Sometimes, wearing my hard hat and steel-toe cap boots, I feel like I’ve joined the Village People (and yes, I do mean YMCA). 🪖👢🎶
The serious part is this: copy-pasting a risk assessment from an old project doesn’t just cut corners for the writer. It cuts corners for the entire production. If something goes wrong, it’s not just paperwork on the line — it’s people, budgets, timelines, reputations, and entire events.
Taking the time to make each risk assessment tailored and watertight isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about safeguarding the project, the crew, the client, and the delivery.
Risk assessments might not be glamorous… but peace of mind? That’s pretty sexy after all.
