📚 Project Gutenberg — a living archive, and what it means for producers.

I came across this archive the other day and though it was worth shouting about. Project Gutenberg is an extraordinary public-facing archive: over 75,000 free eBooks, built and maintained by volunteers, with a focus on older works whose U.S. copyright has expired. It’s a phenomenal resource for content and research.

But, and this is important for anyone using these texts or repurposing them for film, TV or digital projects, “free of copyright” doesn’t always equal “free of legal complexity.” A quick practical note from my work as an archive producer, using Gutenberg material in a production still calls for care. You would still need to consider other jurisdictions, are there are some items on the site that are still copyrighted.

Not a paid post, just a fan of the project.
