I watched Alien : Earth Episode 1.
Honestly.. it’s a bit disapointing.I see RT score of 96% and have to wonder if I watched a different show?
The good things.. It looks fantastic with the ships, aliens and lighting feeling right at home with Ridley’s original look for the movies. And the concept is decent.
The bad. For me it was everything todo with the filmmaking.
From opening scene of the crew of the ship talking it felt deliberately confusing.
It kept glitching to random shots of aliens instead of staying with the action.. even randomly cutting to other characters not on the ship as they are being talked about. Just adding shots as broll over scenes would be jarring in a reality show.. but a tv series of this level is just baffling.
Then i realised this is from Noah Hawley. His work like Legion is visually stunning.. but narratively a complete head scratcher. It’s acceptable with legion because of its subject matter. But with this it just is jarring.
There is one main character.. which we spend a small amount of time getting to know. The rest of the story is not character led.. and just feels like a list of things that happen.
Rule 101 with filmmaking.. the plot isn’t a character.. it’s the backdrop for characters. It’s because of this.. I feel there was a massive missed opportunity to get to know some other interesting characters.
And character oriented storytelling is what made James Cameron’s Aliens so compelling. You got to know all of the marines.. even by name, and often in a cleverly short amount of time.
For this reason.. I’ve given up after one episode.
If anyone has stuck with it.. please let me now if it gets any better?
