It’s a solid movie and has much of what you’d hope for in a James Gunn production.
However it did feel like James Gunn had started by trying to address some of the biggest criticisms of Superman and worked back from there, instead of creating a truly clever idea for the story.
The issue is that Superman is too powerful and this takes away Jeopardy. This is thrown out from the opening scene with the text telling us Superman has just been beaten in a battle.
From here the story whips around at breakneck speed. Lex Luther’s intro sets up the threat but does so in a way that fails to settle into the story. It’s not until 20 minutes in that we get an overlong but welcome scene between Lois and Clark setting up the dilemma of a super hero exerting too much control over a planet’s affairs. It’s a strong idea, that was also well trod with Henry’s Cavils Supermen movies.
David Corenswet does make a great superman. He’s surprisingly relatable for an almost invincible alien superhero. I feel I got to like the character far more than Henry Cavils superman, but probably not as much as Christopher reeves version.
Extra marks need to be given for a great score that unashamedly uses the iconic John Williams theme as a basis. It’s a great idea to include and helps bring back the nostalgia and hope of the Reeves films.
The movie does embrace its more zany side. Some of this works well with krypto the dog. But The crazy hair styles of the green lantern maybe go a bit too campy.
It’s a fine line that the movie straddles, with Nicholas Hoult’s Luther playing a much darker menacing version of the character. I do think Hault’s acting carries the character well and is compelling. However it would have been good to see a bit more depth to the character. This is a problem with the sheer amount of characters stuffed into the 2 hour runtime. Gunn does however do a pretty decent job of giving everyone their moment.
I liked the movie far more than the dark depressing Cavil movies. This won’t suit everyone, but I thought it was a solid start to Gunns DC universe.
I’m genuinely interested to see what comes next from this series.

And just add that Mr Terrific was a super cool character.
Gunn is very good at taking less well known comic characters and giving them a following,
I’m already seeing that Mr Terrific as a standalone movie is being championed.
I was a bit dubious when I first heard krypto was in it.. but it worked super well.
James Gunn is a safe pair of hands.
