YouTube is canceling the ability for creators to monetise videos that use AI generated voice overs from July 15th 2025.
While at the same time Spotify has an AI generated music track sitting at no.1 in its charts.
In an effort to loose the AI ‘Slop’ YouTube is demonetising AI content without significant human commentary.
I presume that this will mean Chanel’s that specialise in AI learning tools should be unaffected. But it could have unintended demonetisation consequences for some. YouTube needs to make sure it’s got good humans to judge appeals in these cases.
Spotify on the other hand puts thousands of hours of AI music out itself. Velvet Sundown marks a bit of a high for AI content proving a hit with users.
Spotify clearly save a fortune in royalty payments by serving its listeners cheap AI content… while YouTube will be making money by demonetising AI content as any advert it makes will no doubt go directly to Google.
In any case AI will get harder to detect.. and it’s clearly a new arms race for content.
And as creators get better at using it creatively..there needs to be a better way of moderating it than banning creators from earning from their work. Ai video is not cheap to create..and if YouTube continue with this approach, a new opertunIty may emerge for a platform that reaches the right balance. so we shall have to see how this plays out.
