Sky has given the go-ahead for a UK edition of NBC’s venerated sketch show Saturday Night Live.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) UK will be produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio (UTAS) UK and SNL US showrunner Lorne Michaels’ outfit Broadway Video. Michaels, who created the format and has overseen it for NBC for most of its 50-year existence, will serve as an executive producer.

Further information on the production teams is expected soon, but the London and Australia-based UTAS teams are currently overseen by Helen Kruger-Bratt, who reports to president Toby Gorman.

@MattWilliams Worked in the 90s but previous attempts like 10 O'Clock Live and ITV's The Nightly Show have fizzled out, so I can't see it having traction here. It'd have to work hard to distinguish itself from the treadmill of UK comedy entertainment shows. It'll need some imaginative thinking - if Jimmy Carr headlines the next press release, I'm out...

@RobinParker I also wonder if we have enough cartoonish political figures to lampoon for cold opens and weekend update (arguably the strongest elements of the US version).

@MattWilliams also there is affection for SNL because it is an half-century-old institution that owes its existence to a specific moment in time, as the movie and Disney documentary have both reminded us. It still exists today on a lot of goodwill, which means it ride out its weaker parts. NBC would have a tough time having a hit with it now if it was a new show, so it's hard to see how Sky can start from scratch
