I’ve worked in TV for 3 decades.. and had a TV all my life.
But not once have I ever seen a TV detector van working. Is this the biggest lie in broadcasting?
The TV licence debate is likely to go on for some time. And even if it’s scrapped, likely to be replaced with an almost identical tax.
But throughout my life.. there has always been comapigns by the BBC to tell people they had fleets of detector vans patrolling the streets. Not only could they tell if you were watching tv, but which Chanel.
The switch to digital, and now broadband service has changed the way TV is delivered nowadays. It seems that not having a TV licence is enough to get hundreds of agressive warning letters sent to your home.(my parent built a new house they were not living in for 3 yesrs.. the harrsssment was constant).
However. The question is., did they ever exist? Or was this just pure gaslighting the public into signing up themselves for a licence through fear. I suspect it would work extremely well. Jsut advertise that detector vans were coming to the area.. and I suspect licence sales went through the roof. And no vans required.
The debate roles on.. and I’ve seen some technical demos thet indicate it might have been possible to do some of the things they said.. but unlikely.
So.. doesn’t anyone have any evidence either way that these thing existed.. or not?
