What is best TV drama of all time?
While everyone will have their favourite.
I have one which I believe is almost perfect and I watch every 7-9 years. I am currently watching it again.. and every time I worry that it won’t stand up to modern viewings… but it remains as captivating as ever.
The show is a channel4 UK miniseries from 1991 called G.B.H.
It follows the rise and fall of corrupt 80’s socialist leader ‘Michael Murray’. This is the story of power, corruption, but told on a very personal level. Many brilliant characters.. everyone is playing everyone else but turn out to be pawns in much bigger games.. It makes for a very compelling story.
The talent involved is crazy. Written by ‘Alan Bleasdale’(boys from the blackstuff), and Executively Produced by TV legend ‘Verity Lambert’ (Doctor who)
The acting talent is stunning. Robert Lindsay puts in the performance of a lifetime as the arrogant politician, that descends into madness. He makes you like and sympathise and laugh with the truly flawed character.
The darkly comic timing is coupled with Michael Palin.. He plays a northern schoolteacher that takes on Lindsay’s character. He’s brilliant and makes you think more of palin in this type of role would have been amazing.
The music is of special note. Do written by Elvis Costello.. it is an orchestral masterpiece. And as much a character as any other part of the show.(I even had this on vinyl as kid).
It’s available to watch in Chanel 4’s on demand service in the uk.. if anyone is interested.
It’s highly recommended viewing.

It’s incredible how well it holds up.
Some old TV drama’s can come across a little dated.
It does feel like a modern show set in the 80’s. Like a period piece.
And despite its 4:3 ration feels quite cinematic still.
