🚨 Why UK TV Commissioners Aren’t Commissioning - An Idiot’s Guide for Experts 🚨
Hey TV Fam,
UK TV, especially ‘middle’ budget productions, are on the brink of extinction. Despite whispers of ‘green shoots,’ 68% of film and TV workers are twiddling their thumbs - thanks to the commissioning slowdown.
So, why aren’t we making new shows? Let me break it down for you - if I can get it, you definitely can too.
Budget Cuts 📉: The Main reason is that UK TV faces a £400 million income drop due to the following:
- Reduced ad revenue (see my previous post for details)
- Decreased subscribers for streaming services
- BBC’s license fee freeze
- Pandemic backlog leading to over-commissioning 🙄
Legacy Systems 🖥️: Outdated tech and workflows are dragging us down. We’ve seen the chaos when inexperienced organizations bite off more than they can chew (AKA Mr Beast and Amazon lawsuits). There HAS to be a middle ground.
Regulatory Hurdles 🏛️: Complex rules and regulations for new media. PACT is lobbying for changes. We need to sing from the same hymn sheet.
Risk Aversion ⚖️: Execs are more risk-averse than ever. With little money in the pot, commissioning is all about scalable formats. TW You Will Be Asked To Pitch The Next Traitors TW
Cost Concerns 💸: High costs of new tech and talent, with production costs up by 10-15%!
Audience Misunderstanding 🤔: Broadcasters are still catching up with what today’s viewers want. Ofcom/overnights can’t compare to the instant data online.
Content Strategy Shifts 🔄: Focus on co-productions with streaming platforms limits new commissions.
As a BAFTA-winning producer and award-winning TV exec who’s all about high-performing online content, I get the power of creating content that resonates globally. Adaptability, creativity, and strategic thinking are key.
