Today, September 10th, 2024, marks ONE YEAR since the final episode of my Korean delivery food sales competition reality show, 'CHEFS INCOGNITO (웃는 사장)'. I developed, series-produced, and series-directed this unique and fun 12-episode reality show. Overseeing every aspect from development to the final delivery over nine months was intense, but I learned so much about unscripted development and production through hands-on experience.
It’s a meaningful moment for me, now that I’m in London, pursuing my ultimate goal of becoming a global TV showrunner. This comes after achieving my goal of being a series producer, director, and development producer in Korea a year ago, following ten years of incredibly fun but challenging work.
'CHEFS INCOGNITO(웃는 사장)' was the first-ever, unique format celebrity cooking competition show. Three of Korea’s top gourmet celebrities simultaneously launched their delivery food restaurants on the Korean major delivery app. They competed for profit solely based on their special food menus (which we developed in collaboration with the cast, chefs, and producers!) without revealing their identities or any marketing efforts. The top-selling business won the prize, while failing to break even resulted in elimination. When developing this format, my goal was to blend the fresh, new theme of 'delivery food' with the universally loved 'cooking competition' format. My principle for developing formats is to create concepts that appeal to global audiences and can be adapted internationally.
Another twist I came up with was 'Three Kitchens Under One Roof using Only One Order Alert System.' In this world's first kitchen set, contestants shared real-time order alerts, detailed sales records, and all their emotions in one shared space. I came up with this unique production design and the POS (Point of Sales) system to maximize the extreme reality of competition. Through this specially designed set, I successfully captured the raw, organic emotions of the cast, which are essential elements of any great reality show. I created unique story arcs and visual styles that were unprecedented in the Korean TV landscape and successfully captured the audience's attention.
