We read a lot about the NHS being in crisis, and the genuine challenges it has to face. This series from the Garden shows it being excellent. Very proud to have been part of this team.

I shot the lead story on ep1 of last week's stunning series 3 of Emergency on Channel4. Also edit produced episode 4. In the series, the London Major trauma network comes to the aid of these cases, stripped across 4 continuous episodes.

@NickShaw No doubt an excellent series. I've made several in hospital A+Es also. I wonder if our tendency to film there, where the action is the most extreme and the medical staff MUST respond immediately with extreme care and honed procedures, skews the impression of the general state of the NHS somewhat. Having spent almost 2 weeks over the last couple of months supporting a young person as an inpatient I can tell you first-hand that many systems are sloppy, several staff operating well below standard and communication is terrible, both to patients and between departments. I'm still a massive supporter of the NHS but it needs a massive overhaul, however impressive its emergency response can be.

@LorraineO'Keeffe Thanks for your thoughtful observations Lorraine, and I’m sure that your good work with that young person has been given with care and compassion. I am also a passionate supporter of the NHS, my mum was a district nurse for decades and her dad was a neighbourhood GP. There have been excellent TV documentaries made on the endemic challenges of running such a sprawling and complex organism as the NHS: Ambulance, several fantastic Dispatches, Panoramas and a bit further back the BBC2 series Hospital. Plus various scandals in the news media. These shows have all included stories of times the NHS has regrettably fallen short. And it’s in this context that this series Emergency celebrates how the NHS still provides critical care of the highest order, but you’re right we shouldn’t allow our national family jewels’ struggles to go untold.
