Ultimately what we are seeing right now is the democratic party in crisis.
The populism of Trump has won previously because it came up against a democrat party that was not up to standard, was not prepared to offer a realistic opposition. Hillary Clinton presented an image of an arrogant corrupt sleazebag, and although Trump did not do much better he bolstered his image with populism, which seems to make his arrogance play to his strength.
But as soon as the Democrats fielded a stronger candidate that did not present such problems (Joe Biden) they were much more successful. Biden is bereft of major controversies, the only effective mud Trump could sling was that he was old and suffering cognitive decline, which very much has splash damage as Trump is not much younger and if elected in 2024 would be older the Biden in 2020.
However, the poor debate performance ended Biden's ability to draw independents to him. His very apparent mental decline made many worry in an entirely un-ideological way about his ability to run the country and specifically to keep up with ongoing current foreign policy crises.
An example given by blogger "Combat Veteran Reacts," a previous supporter of Biden was the Cuban missile crisis, which saw an extremely fast paced situation developing in which then president Kennedy had to be constantly up and about doing things, talking to people, receiving intelligence and making decisions into the hours of the night. At this time time, CVR brings up Biden's previous comments about simply refusing to make any decision after 8pm. It must be noted that these kind of crises CANNOT BE PLANNED FOR.
As soon as it became apparent that Biden had problems and thus was unable to win against Trump, the Democrats ran into problems and it became necessary for them to find a new candidate that can.
Thus far, they have failed.
I find it extremely important, that the Democrats hunt around for anyone in their midst that is more similar to Biden, with no major controversies around their belt that can effectively mobilise the independents against Trump.
None of their candidates can currently do it, and that is a problem.
