The next most popular candidate after Kamala Harris is Gavin Newsom. He has a litany of problems that make him very scary to the average American voter, most of which boil down to his failures as governor of California.
California in recent times under his tenure has garnered a truly horrible reputation. The once "Golden" state which previously had a reputation for freedom, beautiful beaches and vistas, Hollywood and dreams of the future, now conjures up images of the worst parts of America, drug addicts and the homeless on the street alongside used heroin needles and human faeces and absurd rent and housing prices which only make the aforementioned problems worse. He is often mocked and ridiculed for being seemingly extremely out of touch, focusing his PR around the green agenda, which while a noble goal in and of itself comes off as extremely arrogant neglect. A common jibe aimed at him goes something along the lines of: "Yeah, we have **** on the streets and a massive homeless and organised crime problem, but at least we're not polluting the world with plastic straws!" A sarcastic jibe insinuating that Newsom does not care about the living standards and problems facing Americans and substituting that for lofty ideas around stopping climate change, which again, remains a noble goal, but a very long term one that many Americans particularly in suffering areas just do not resonate with.
I'm sure many Newsom fans will comment on this saying things like "That's not Newsom's fault" or "That's not the democrats fault!" or even "That's just exaggeration, it's not that bad!"
And maybe they are and maybe they are not, but unfortunately that is not important.
The important part is that people PERCIEVE Newsom as responsible for the sorry state of affairs. A state of affairs that has seen tens if not hundreds of thousands of Californians leave the state for greener pastures, which has been dubbed by the residents of those greener pastures as the "Californian refugee exodus/influx." A phenomenon that is also extremely unpopular in those greener pastures. This will rankle and make his campaign against Trump's cult of personality extremely difficult. Many Americans will fear the conditions that have come about in California or have been perceived as coming about in California spreading outwards to the rest of America if Newsom is elected.
