A day if the life of a commercials producer... is varied!

In line with my update on the role of a PE I received a few messages asking about my role in short-form - as a producer of commercials and digital content.

A producer in the world of commercials is a wizard - they make magic happen! Often working long hours due to the fast turnaround nature of short-form, they pull out all of the stops to ensure a brief is brought to life in the best creative way possible, safely and on budget / schedule.

The producer manages client expectations and has to have honest conversations with Directors regarding vision v reality - whilst the scope for a commercial to be high end is often there, budgets are becoming more streamlined and expectations need to be managed all around.

Similar to a PE / EP in television, commercial producers are involved at every step in creating and producing ad campaigns.

Commercial producers are the creators and managers of a project budget in short-form but in addition to the business management side of a project, unlike TV, they are also involved with all creative decisions including working with writers and interpreting the script, casting, overseeing the creative delivery across locations, the style (wardrobe, HMU, movement) and the post plan.

The exact role will vary depending on whether a producer is working for a production company or directly with an agency / brand - and also, the size of the market. On a smaller team a producer will be heavily involved from brief to delivery - whereas on a larger scale (and budget)project they may oversee the work of a team of specialist HODs, hired for their expertise in an area i.e. locations.

The responsibility across any size project of a producer is the budget - from drawing it up post initial brief to day to day management and ensuring delivery targets are hit financially.

Pre-production prep is when the producer oversees set up including scripts and storyboard, budget approval, location scouting, casting and crewing up.

Once the plans are approved at the PPM (pre production meeting) the wheels are set in motion to shoot - overseeing the teams, booking kit and crew and negotiating location rental fees or booking studio time.

The producer takes responsibility alongside the 1st AD and HODs for H&S on set - so is heavily involved in prep of the RA and carrying out its protocols on set. They work with the AD to ensure we run to schedule and check in with HODs to pre-empt any issues and find solutions before a problem even arises.

After the shoot the edit kicks off traditionally quickly and the producer generally will oversee post-production workflow - working alongside the editor to deliver the very best product for the client.

It is an exciting role - much faster paced than TV - and the rewards are high. The projects are much shorter and so you would need to be prepared to have gaps or network like a fiend to keep yourself busy week to week!
