ARE YOU A SKILLS STACKER?

“It’s easier and more effective to be in the top 10% in several different skills — your “stack” — than it is to be in the top 1% in any one skill".

Skill stacking is the strategy of combining several normal skills to create a combination of abilities, that SHOULD make you extraordinarily valuable.

I've never restricted myself to one genre of television and content making. 10 years ago that led to raised eyebrows - now, companies and people are far more receptive.

Everything has a word these days and my desire - and ability - to work across television and digital. with a wider ranging slate of credits than a specialist, makes me a generalist.

A generalist shouldn't be viewed as someone weak or without focus.

It shows someone with resilience - we fight to take on the projects we do... we don't always have the most identical credits so when we are hired it's because we've stood out as a person, not just a CV.

There are tons of positives to being a generalist and having a broad stack:

As Ben Schmidt from How Google Works said: a smart generalist doesn’t have bias, so is free to survey the wide range of solutions and gravitate to the best one.

Building more flexibility into your work is the only way to become indispensable... having worked as both a producer and in production I can find creative solutions to budget challenges as one example. I am not a no girl.

Competency in multiple skills is the ultimate career insurance. The 21st century requires us all to become generalists to remain current on various fields of study, technology, and the changing world around us. This is especially true for us media folk as the platforms via which people are now watching TV are changing - and that in turn affects how programme making is financed, designed and brought to fruition

“Modern work demands knowledge transfer: the ability to apply knowledge to new situations and different domains.” — David Epstein, Range... I've always made it my business to keep on top of the varying media domains and ways of making content. (Thankfully) long gone are the days of simply snipping 10 seconds of a TV show for socials. It's imperative to know the audience for each type of viewing platform and how to best showcase your programme making to them and FOR them. Someone streaming on TikTok won't be engaged by a 15 second snip of a longer scene, that isolated, makes little sense. They don't want to be teased in... they are in. That is their platform and may be all they watch. So deliver something that makes them come back.

Stacking helps you stand out from the crowd... be proud of your range 🙌

Talking of stacks I like mine high with bacon and maple syrup 😋
