But while we think the industry should move away from FB for recruiting, we can’t agree that it makes any sense to reinvent the wheel and recreate another central industry database when one already exists.
To do so would require an enormous investment of company or public money at a time when resources are tight. Both investment and focus could be better directed elsewhere, surely? Moreover, It would complicate the lives of freelancers and recruiters alike - resulting in a worst outcome for both. In short it would do a big disservice to the communities it was purporting to help.
Even if a platform got built and got going (and over the last decade, hundreds of thousands of pounds of public money has gone into numerous failed attempts dreamt up from on-high) the ongoing running costs would be huge. In terms of GDPR, legal, compliance, maintenance and infrastructure - running a platform of size is expensive.
This is the reason the coalition vetoed this same idea when it was proposed a couple of years back and now more than ever it’s non sensical. We must be careful we don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater.
