What did Amy watch last night? Big Brother
I know I said I wasn't going to... In fact I watched something else and had a whole different post I wanted to write.
But, I did... and I loved it.
I honestly think that recent news headlines distorted the way I watched the first episode. The media is so full of divisive messages right now and I was expecting to see this reflected in the show which is why I was braced for the worst.
But last night watching everyone's support and love for Hallie after she came out as being transgender was truly heart-warming. And it was great to hear the open and honest conversations that followed. It was also lovely to see the housemates discuss how they'll coexist with Farida's halal requirements and to see two political foes find common ground.
Day 2 in the Big Brother house was an hour of escapism that revealed what a world of tolerance and acceptance could look like. It was a little glimmer of hope that the world isn't as awful a place as headlines may lead us to believe.
I know as TV producers we can easily get over-inflated ideas about the impact our shows have… but if last night’s conversations on BB manage to ripple into the real world and make a handful of people shift their mindset, that’s still an impact. I'm not looking at X/Twitter today to see what folk have to say nor will I be sucked into the clickbait articles about BB being too woke.... I'm quite happily staying in my BB bubble.
I'm so glad I gave it a second chance.
